Today in History

1994 - The Channel Tunnel linking the United Kingdom with France is opened. The Channel Tunnel, often referred to as the "Chunnel," was inaugurated by Queen Elizabeth II of the United Kingdom and French President François Mitterrand. It links the United Kingdom with France beneath the English Channel. Stretching over 31 miles (50 kilometers), it's the longest undersea tunnel in the world. The Chunnel revolutionized travel between the UK and mainland Europe, enabling high-speed train services like the Eurostar to connect London, Paris, and Brussels in a matter of hours.

Born this Day

George Clooney (Born on May 6, 1961) is an American actor, director, producer, and philanthropist. He rose to fame for his role as Dr. Doug Ross on the medical drama series "ER" and has since starred in numerous successful films, including "Ocean's Eleven," "Up in the Air," and "Gravity." Clooney is known for his humanitarian work and advocacy on issues such as human rights and global poverty.

Gabourey Sidibe (Born on May 6, 1983) is an American actress and author. She gained widespread acclaim and an Academy Award nomination for her debut role in the film "Precious" (2009). Sidibe has since appeared in various film and television projects, including "American Horror Story" and "Empire." She is also an outspoken advocate for body positivity and mental health awareness.

Meek Mill (Born on May 6, 1987) is an American rapper, songwriter, and activist. He gained prominence in the hip-hop scene with his mixtapes and debut studio album, "Dreams and Nightmares" (2012). Meek Mill is known for his socially conscious lyrics and advocacy for criminal justice reform, drawing attention to issues such as mass incarceration and police brutality.

1946- Sony is founded. Sony Corporation was founded in 1946 in Tokyo, Japan. It originally started as a small electronics shop. Sony has grown into one of the world's largest and most influential technology companies. It is a diverse business which includes consumer electronics (such as TVs, cameras, and audio devices), gaming (PlayStation consoles and games), entertainment (Sony Pictures), and financial services. Sony's contributions to technology have been significant, with iconic products like the Walkman, PlayStation consoles, and BRAVIA TVs.

Born this Day

Rabindranath Tagore (born on May 7, 1861) was renowned Bengali poet, philosopher, and artist. He became the first non-European to win the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1913 for his collection of poems, "Gitanjali." Tagore's literary works, including novels, essays, and songs, celebrated themes of spirituality, nature, and humanism. He was also a key figure in the Bengal Renaissance, advocating for cultural revival and social reform in India during the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

Eva Perón (Born on May 7, 1919) commonly known as Evita, was an influential Argentine political leader and actress. She rose to prominence as the First Lady of Argentina during the presidency of her husband, Juan Perón. Eva Perón championed social justice and women's suffrage and played a significant role in advancing labor rights and social welfare programs in Argentina. Despite her untimely death at the age of 33, Evita's legacy continues to inspire political movements and cultural iconography in Argentina and beyond.

Alexander Ludwig (born on May 7, 1992) is a talented actor known for his roles in film and television. He gained widespread recognition for his portrayal of Cato in "The Hunger Games" (2012) and Bjorn Ironside in the historical drama series "Vikings" (2013-2020). Ludwig has showcased his versatility as an actor in various genres, from action-packed blockbusters to dramatic television series, earning critical acclaim and a dedicated fan base throughout his career.

1970- The Beatles release their album Let It Be. The Beatles released their album "Let It Be" on May 8, 1970. It was their twelfth and final studio album, it was recorded before "Abbey Road" but released afterward due to various delays and conflicts within the band. The album features a mix of studio recordings and tracks recorded during the band's famous rooftop concert in January 1969. "Let It Be" includes iconic songs such as the title track "Let It Be," "The Long and Winding Road," and "Get Back." Despite mixed critical reception at the time of its release, the album has since become a classic.

Born this Day

Enrique Iglesias (born on May 8, 1975) is a Spanish singer, songwriter, and actor. He is known for his chart-topping hits such as "Bailando," "Hero," and "I Like It." Iglesias has sold millions of albums worldwide and has won numerous awards for his music, including Grammy Awards and Latin Grammy Awards. 

Harry S. Truman (born on May 8, 1884) was the 33rd President of the United States, serving from 1945 to 1953. Truman became president following the death of Franklin D. Roosevelt and played a crucial role in shaping post-World War II policies. He also oversaw the establishment of the United Nations and the implementation of the Marshall Plan to rebuild Europe.

Melissa Gilbert (born on May 8, 1964) is an American actress and television director. She is best known for her role as Laura Ingalls Wilder in the television series "Little House on the Prairie," which aired from 1974 to 1983. Gilbert's performance in the series earned her critical acclaim and several award nominations. 868 AD- The earliest surviving printed book is produced in China. The earliest surviving dated printed book produced in China is the "Diamond Sutra," which was printed in 868 AD during the Tang Dynasty. The "Diamond Sutra" is a Mahayana Buddhist text consisting of teachings attributed to the Buddha, particularly emphasizing the concept of impermanence and the practice of detachment. The book was printed using woodblock printing, a method in which text and images are carved onto wooden blocks and then inked and pressed onto paper. The "Diamond Sutra" is significant not only as the earliest dated printed book in China but also as one of the earliest surviving printed texts in the world. It was discovered in the early 20th century in the Mogao Caves of Dunhuang, along the ancient Silk Road. Today, the "Diamond Sutra" is in the British Library in London, where it remains a prized artifact of both Chinese printing history and Buddhist religious tradition.

Make sure you have proper footwear and the area is clear. Because physical exercise can be strenuous and may cause risk of injury, we urge you to obtain a physical examination from a doctor before participating in any exercise activities and participate only as much as you feel comfortable. These online exercises are intended to encourage you to gently move your body – so don’t push yourself beyond what feels okay. Participating in exercise activities included in the Alzheimer Society of Niagara Region's activity site is done entirely at your own risk.
