Alzheimer Coffee Break™ Media Kit

Alzheimer Coffee Break: Sept. 21, 2006

Coffee Break Quick Facts

  • Coffee Break™ is the Alzheimer Society's annual nationwide event where friends, neighbours, co-workers and customers gather in communities across Canada to raise funds for local Alzheimer Societies.
  • Participants at the event make a donation in exchange for a cup of coffee, or purchase a paper cut-out of a coffee cup to show their support.
  • Coffee breaks are unique to each location and can take place anywhere: retail stores, businesses, care facilities, schools, coffee shops, community centres, churches and in people's homes.
  • The event funds essential programs and services for Alzheimer Societies, helping to provide support, information and education to people with Alzheimer's disease, families and health-care providers.
  • Since the first Coffee Break was held in 1996, almost $8 million has been raised.
  • The 2005 Coffee Break raised more than $1.1 million alone, a nine per cent increase over 2004.
  • This year, the Alzheimer Society is raising the bar even higher, with a fundraising goal of $1.25 million.
  • The 2006 Coffee Break, which kicks off September 21, will hold special significance for a number of reasons, including:
    • The event will run in conjunction with World Alzheimer's Day
    • This year marks the 100th anniversary of the identification of Alzheimer's disease
    • In recognition of both of these, a team of international climbers will be making their way to the top of Mount Kilimanjaro in Tanzania as part of the Ascent for Alzheimer's. Canadian Dave McAmmond of Edmonton, Alberta, will be part of this world team, raising funds for Alzheimer research, as well as increasing global awareness of the disease.
  • The Alzheimer Society thanks gold sponsor Joey's Only Seafood Restaurants, and silver sponsors Pfizer Canada Inc. and Creative Memories for their support. Appreciation is also extended to generous in-kind sponsor Sara Lee Corporation.
  • For more information about Coffee Break or to host an event, contact your local Alzheimer Society, call
