Generous gift opens more doors for families

Noted local philanthropist Dr. Allan Carswell and his wife Helen have made an extraordinarily generous gift of $600,000 in recognition of the positive impact AS York has had on their lives.

Helen Carswell has been a client for several years in our acclaimed D.A.Y. Program, a safe, individualized recreational social day care for persons with dementia. Currently 260 families attend this essential program across three AS York locations, but Dr. Carswell was struck by the waiting list. Now, more families dealing with dementia will benefit by participating in the D.A.Y. Program, as a result of the Carswell Family Foundation gift. Allan Carswell has also attended Caregiver Support sessions, which he finds invaluable for helping managing day to day care and connecting with a group of others caring for those with dementia.

Because he truly believes in the urgent need for the services that AS York provides, Dr. Carswell is issuing a challenge to match his gift of $600,000, effectively doubling his donation’s impact. Because he views AS York as his extended family, he has also stepped forward to lend his personal leadership by helping to Chair this exciting endeavour.

Allan’s gift is already inspiring greater levels of financial support, and creating a lasting legacy for people affected by dementia.  He believes:

“Pay it forward. Repay to others the good deeds we receive from our many Alzheimer’s benefactors.’’

The Alzheimer Society of York Region is exceptionally grateful for the continued and thoughtful generosity of Dr. Carswell and the Carswell Family Foundation.
