Volunteer Profile - Irene Britton
After eight years as a volunteer, Irene still walks in with the same enthusiasm she did when she started. She first got involved when she was inspired by a call for volunteers in the newspaper. “At the time, my mother was suffering from Alzheimer’s disease, so I felt like it would be a good fit.” Irene is involved in just about everything she can be at the Society, helping with reception and almost all of our special events. One of her favourite things about volunteering is the sense of camaraderie that comes with it.
In addition to her work with the Alzheimer Society, Irene is a board member of the Kaministiqua Community Centre and keeps active with weekly disc-ing (like curling without the ice). She enjoys shopping and is a social butterfly, spending time with her friends and family, especially her nine grandchildren, whenever she can.
“There are just so many highlights from my years as a volunteer. I feel a sense of purpose, that I’m still contributing to something meaningful, and that I’m honouring my mom’s memory through the work that I do.”
