Education for the caregiver

The Alzheimer Society of Saskatchewan offers several Learning Series for family, care partners and friends affected by Alzheimer's disease and other dementias. These classes are offered in Regina and Saskatoon, and throughout the province via Telehealth.

All Learning Series are provided free of charge for participants, but donations to the Society to help defray costs are appreciated.

Pre-registration is required for all classes.

Care Essentials

A four-week learning series for families, care partners and friends of people in the middle stages of dementia who may have more complex care needs due to the progression of the disease.

Participants will:

  • Increase their knowledge of the progression of dementia,
  • Discuss strategies for reducing caregiver stress,
  • Identify changes in communication as dementia progresses,
  • Discuss practical approaches to caregiving
  • Identify available community resources.

Options for Care

A learning series for families, care partners and friends of people in the later stages of dementia who may be asking, “Is it time for more care?”  (e.g. Respite, Personal Care Home, Long Term Care).

Participants will:

  • Increase their knowledge of changes that may occur in the later stages of dementia
  • Discuss care options that address increasing needs
  • Identify housing options
  • Discuss the role of the regional health authority in the placement process
  • Make specific plans to help with the transition.

Care in the Later Stages

A three-week learning series for families, care partners and friends affected by dementia focusing on end of life care.

Participants will:

  • Increase their knowledge of the last stages of Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias
  • Discuss the natural progression of the disease
  • Review complications and difficult decisions that may arise
  • Identify ways to provide care that promotes comfort, dignity and quality of life
  • Discuss the process of grief.
