Meet Peter Does

Peter Does

After Peter Does’ wife was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease, the couple knew where they needed to go.

The Alzheimer Society of Oxford was the first stop. They wanted to hear about the Society’s services and learn how to manage and thrive with a dementia diagnosis.

“They’re doing a great job here. It helped my wife and myself quite a bit,” Peter said.

Both Peter and his wife took part in a number of programs at the Society.

“We had a volunteer companion for a while,” Peter said. “We would go to the support group meetings here.  Then I got involved with the Walk after that.”

That was around 2000, and Peter walked for 15 years, raising more than $5,000.

He worked the phones to fill up his pledge sheets.

“I call people that I know, friends and relatives and neighbours and people from our church,” Peter said.

And he enjoyed attending the Walk, too, especially when his wife was able to come along.

“We liked it,” he said.

But for Peter, participating in the annual fundraiser was less about the event itself and more about giving back to the Alzheimer Society.

“I thought it was a very good purpose, a good cause,” he said.

“I think the money is well spent here.”

Peter Does is 89 and lives in Woodstock.
