Meet Morgan Bilger

Hall of Fame Morgan Bilger

Morgan Bilger knows how valuable the Alzheimer Society of Oxford can be for those with Alzheimer’s and their caregivers.

For years he cared for his wife Marie, who had dementia, and their family benefitted greatly from the organization’s services. The couple took part in everything from a caregiver support group to the Volunteer Companion Program.

“When Marie was still at home, the Alzheimer Society had a volunteer come and visit her,” Bilger said. “She would take her uptown and they would go into a restaurant and have a tea or a biscuit or something. It would be a break.”

It was a necessary, and much appreciated, opportunity for Bilger to hit pause on caregiving duties and focus on himself for a couple of hours.

He also took advantage of the caregiver support group for many years. Other times Bilger would take Marie to a program at the VON Adult Day Program in Tillsonburg – she loved it so much she began to consider it her “job” – while he snuck in a few rounds of golf.

Pounding the pavement is nothing new for Bilger, who walks twice a day, even as he closes in on 92 years old.

Between his personal connection to Alzheimer’s and a liking for walking, fundraising with the Walk for Alzheimer’s just made sense for Bilger.

And he has put his whole heart into the role, earning the top fundraiser spot for nearly a decade.

“I raised about $23,000. That’s a tough job, you’ve got to knock on doors,” he said. “(But) I was doing my duty.”

Bilger recently passed the torch to his neighbour Marg Patterson. But every year his name sits at the top of her pledge sheet. He just can’t quit.

The Walk was a great way to give back, Bilger said.

“I felt good about doing it.”

Morgan Bilger is 91 years old and lives in Tillsonburg. Morgan has raised over $5000 for the Walk for Alzheimer's.
