June is Stroke Month
June 2nd, 2014
The focus this year is “Stroke and Dementia.” What’s the link?
Approximately one in three Ontarians will develop stroke, dementia, or both, and the presence of either increases the risk of the other.
The good news is that although these diseases share common risk factors, the risk for each can be mitigated by a healthy lifestyle. In other words, by reducing the risk of heart disease and stroke, the risk of dementia also decreases.
When we learned this, we jumped at the opportunity of working with the Ontario Stroke Network and the Heart and Stroke Foundation during Stroke Month. Collaborating with them is another way the Alzheimer Society can contribute to the well-being of all Ontarians.
