Application Guidelines

Process of Selection:
Members of the Research Advisory Committee of the Alzheimer Society of Nova Scotia will review all submissions. The primary evaluation criteria are scientific excellence and feasibility of the proposed research project, the quality of the application package, and in particular, the clarity of the lay summary. The review group will also consider the merit of the student, as indicated by the letters of support and other supporting documents. Applicants will be notified in June of the Committee’s decision. The award will be officially presented at the Society’s Annual General Meeting in June, 2012

Criteria – Phyllis Horton Bursaries:
  1. Open to any student (graduate, undergraduate, medical) working in Nova Scotia
  2. Research focused on dementia (Alzheimer disease or other)
  3. No particular discipline or type of research favored (e.g. basic science, clinical research, psychosocial research)
  4. The primary evaluation criteria are:
    • scientific excellence and feasibility of the proposed research project
    • quality and clarity of the application package 
    • clarity of the lay summary in communicating the research project and its relevance to the general public
    • merit of the student as indicated by references and the supervisor’s letter.
Application Procedures:
A student applying for the bursary must submit a research proposal (total maximum pages 8) including
  • Purpose (i.e. hypotheses, thesis proposal, or brief (maximum 4 pages) summary of the research). Method (type and number of subjects, study design)
  • Analysis of data (how the data will be analysed)
  • Implications of the study
  • One-page Lay summary
  • Ethical issues (ethical approval from the institute’s research committee; mechanisms to preserve confidentiality; and any risks/discomforts/benefits to the participants as a result of the study)
  • Statement about your career interest in the field of serving people with dementia
  • Statements of other research funding you are currently receiving. 
  • Two letters of support must accompany the outline. Letters should be from the university/ institution’s Ethics Committee and from the faculty advisor/professor, or someone else who is familiar with the applicant’s work. 
  • The application must also include a current CV that lists any other academic or financial awards.
Students will be asked to provide the Alzheimer Society of Nova Scotia with a copy of their final paper, which includes a summary of their findings.
