Family Support Group Outreach

In late March, Danielle Moore, the First Link Coordinator for the Alzheimer Society of Newfoundland and Labrador, was in central Newfoundland promoting our family support group. She held presentations at Lakeside Homes in Gander and at North Haven Manor in Lewisporte. These presentations provided information and training on how to hold a family support group. The Society was impressed by how well these events were attended and by how much interest was expressed by residents of Central Newfoundland. We look forward to seeing a family support group developing in that area in the near future.

We would like to extend our sincerest gratitude to the Community Foundation of Newfoundland and Labrador for helping us make our goal a reality. Like us, they recognized the need for the residents of this province to have somewhere to go in their area to receive support. The foundation generously supported our initiative by providing us with a grant to make promotion and training for the family support group a possibility.

Many family members of those affected by Alzheimer’s disease or a related dementia struggle alone when they don’t have too. They are not alone. With over 8,666 people affected within this province, there are many people on a similar journey to help. Together, by sharing and learning from one another, we can make the journey with dementia a little easier.

On the third Thursday of each month, the family support group is physically held at the Alzheimer Society’s provincial head office in Mount Pearl. People attend from the local area and from across the province via conference call. However, our goal is for there to be local family support groups held in each region of this province for people to attend. No other form of communication can replace the effectiveness of being face to face with the person you are speaking with.

If you would like to learn more about holding a family support group in your area, contact our provincial office. We have information and training materials that we would love to share with you to help you start a group in your area!
